How Did I Get Here?
My Origin Story
1994
I learned business in a basement salon.
My mother built a business after immigrating from Haiti.
I swept floors.
Answered phones.
Watched women walk in carrying burdens and leave standing taller.
Long before I understood systems...
I was watching one.
2016
I entered corporate America believing stability was the goal.
Five years later, I had learned something nobody tells you:
Working hard inside the wrong system doesn't guarantee freedom.
That realization planted the seed of entrepreneurship.
2016
Motherhood changed everything.
Success stopped being about titles and paychecks.
It became about presence.
Freedom.
Stewardship.
And building a life that aligned with my values.
2018
I stepped fully into the beauty industry.
What started as a leap of faith became the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey.
For the first time, I was building something that belonged to me.
2020
I opened my salon and spa.
The clients came.
The business grew.
The dream was becoming real.
I thought I was building a salon.
God was preparing me for something much bigger.
2022
A tow truck crashed into my salon building.
In a moment, what took years to build was gone.
It was one of the hardest seasons of my life.
But it forced me to ask a question that would change everything:
If the business disappeared tomorrow, what would remain?
The answer wasn't the building.
It was the wisdom. The systems.The lessons.
The rubble I had to build from.
2023
I launched Beauty By Merlz.
For the first time, I stepped into the world of product-based business.
Pop-up markets.
Product sales.
E-commerce.
Brand visibility.
I learned how to position myself, market myself, and build relationships beyond the treatment room.
The business taught me that visibility creates opportunities long before sales happen.
2023
That same year, I joined the leadership board of Women on the Rise.
What began as a community became a leadership laboratory.
I spent two years serving, learning, mentoring, speaking, and building relationships with women entrepreneurs from different industries.
It was here that I found my voice as a leader.
Not just a beauty professional.
A leader.
Not just a business owner.
A builder of people.
2024
Beauty Biz Bestie began taking shape.
What started as helping women navigate business challenges became something deeper.
I kept seeing the same pattern.
The problem wasn't talent.
The problem wasn't ambition.
The problem was operational chaos.
Brilliant women were trapped inside businesses that depended entirely on them.
2025
Life tested everything I believed and had worked for.
During a medical emergency that required surgery and recovery, my business continued operating.
For the first time, I experienced what I had been teaching:
A business should support your life when life gets difficult.
